Background: Leucine-rich repeat kinase 2 (LRRK2), also known as dardarin and PARK8, is a kinase enzyme that in humans is encoded by the LRRK2 gene. LRRK2 is a member of the leucine-rich repeat kinase family, which phosphorylates a broad range of proteins involved in multiple processes such as neuronal plasticity, autophagy, and vesicle trafficking. Mutations in the LRRK2 gene causes one of the most common monogenic forms of Parkinson disease (PD) . Also, several polymorphic variants in LRRK2 also modulate risk of sporadic PD.
